Mikel Arteta says he’s “confident” that Arsenal talisman Bukayo Saka will sign a new contract with the club, and discussed the legacy he thinks the winger will leave.
Saka is currently under contract until 2027 but is closing in on a new deal with the club.
And Arteta says Saka “admitted to me and the club, and Emek [his agent] as well, that they want to continue to be here”.
“I think it’s a very healthy and powerful relationship,” he added. “The journey that he had at the club and what he’s become, it’s something that we want to maintain, and I think that’s something that is going to leave a legacy at this football club, and he needs to fulfil that role, which is great.”
Centre-back pair William Saliba and Gabriel have already negotiated new long-term deals with sporting director Andrea Berta, while only Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli remain the only other two players left in the squad set to be out of contract in 2027.
“I think it’s been a very clear vision and route [as to] how we wanted to do things,” Arteta said in regards to getting the deal done soon. “I think ownership has been incredibly supportive and determined to make sure that we can continue the journey with these players and maintain the core of the team.”
