Mikel Arteta says his long-term ambition is to build “the best club in the world” as the Arsenal boss reflected on his time in charge amid reports he is close to signing a new contract.

Arteta has transformed the Gunners since taking over in his first senior managerial role, but insists his focus remains on taking things “day by day” despite the club’s long-term ambitions.

“When I just joined, probably the only thing I was thinking was, ‘What do I do today?’” Arteta said.

“Especially when I didn’t have any experience to manage any team at any level. So then you take the job day by day, and obviously it’s been a few years now, which I’m really happy and grateful for.

“Let’s see what happens for the future.”

But Arteta made clear the scale of his ambitions for Arsenal as he outlined the importance of having the club’s owners, staff, players and supporters pulling in the same direction.

“Obviously we have to have a mid-long-term vision, which is to build the best club in the world,” he said. “I think that has to be, without any question or doubt, what we have to do.

“You have to rely so much on people. First of all, our owners and the fantastic motivation and ambition that they have to take this club to that point.

“And then the level of connection that you build within the staff, within the players, and especially our supporters to create the right environment, the right ecosystem around it.

“Everybody aligned with the same ambition and to daily try to achieve it.”
