Arsenal could rival Barcelona for Erling Haaland if Man City exit opens up

Arsenal could afford to make a major move for Erling Haaland if the Manchester City striker becomes available, although Barcelona are viewed as a more likely destination for the Norway international.

The situation around Haaland has become increasingly uncertain following City’s financial verdict and the possibility of significant sporting sanctions. City have appealed the independent commission’s findings, meaning any potential transfer scenario remains hypothetical.

According to TEAMtalk, Arsenal would have the financial capacity to pursue Haaland should he enter the market. The Gunners have been searching for a leading striker and were heavily linked with a move for Julián Alvarez during the summer.

TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey said Arsenal would naturally consider Haaland if a player of his calibre became available, but indicated that the striker’s preference could ultimately point towards Spain.

“Our understanding is that the timeline – irrespective of a City relegation – was that Haaland and his camp were looking at 2027 for a transfer,” Bailey said.

Arsenal could make move for Erling Haaland but Barcelona hold advantage

He added that Arsenal could afford the Norwegian but claimed Haaland “wants to go to Spain”, with Barcelona and Real Madrid identified as the principal destinations.

Barcelona are considered particularly attractive because of their need to eventually replace Robert Lewandowski. Bailey suggested the Catalan club could offer Haaland a more straightforward route into their attack than Real Madrid, whose forward line already contains several high-profile options.

A move in 2027 would also fit the timeline reported by TEAMtalk, with Haaland’s camp said to be considering a transfer during a period between major international tournaments.

For Arsenal, the financial capability to pursue Haaland does not necessarily mean a move is imminent. The club would still have to compete with Europe’s biggest sides for the striker, while Haaland’s own preference for Spain could prove significant.

Much will also depend on the outcome of City’s appeal and any eventual punishment. Until those matters are resolved, speculation over Haaland’s future remains conditional rather than evidence of an impending departure.
