Mikel Arteta knows an Arsenal excuse for potentially failing to win the Premier League title this season is redundant, while he’s made a wrong prediction…
Arsenal will never have a better chance of ending their long wait for a Premier League title than this season; they comfortably have the best squad in the division and their main rivals are not the teams they once were.
The north London outfit’s immense summer transfer business ensured Arteta will not be left short in any position this season, with their £250m spend leaving the head coach with multiple options of a similar standard in every area.
Notable summer signings Viktor Gyokeres, Eberechi Eze, Martin Zubimendi and Noni Madueke have added to a stacked squad, which is clearly the most complete in the division.
Arsenal have reaped the rewards of their gradual growth under Arteta this season, establishing their dominance in various competitions with an immense 18-game unbeaten run between August and December.
Naturally, Arsenal bounced back in midweek to beat Club Brugge 3-0 and there will likely be a procession at the Emirates when bottom-placed Wolves come calling this weekend.
With Man City and Aston Villa having away games against Crystal Palace and West Ham respectively this weekend, it is certainly conceivable that the Gunners end this week with a bigger lead at the top.
Arsenal and Villa being the only exceptions to the Premier League’s inconsistency rule this season backs up this point, with this making Arteta’s “90 points” prediction way off the mark.
“[There is that risk] in any Premier League match and especially against a team that is fighting for results. I know the manager well and how he will push his players. We know what we have to do,” Arteta told reporters.
“In the end you are going to have to get over 90 points to win it [the title], that means winning a lot of football matches.”

With the quality of Arsenal’s squad, they are running out of excuses for failing to win a major trophy, though their injury issues continue to be mentioned as a possible cause for a downfall.
Arsenal have been particularly hit at centre-back as Piero Hincapie and Christian Norgaard started together in midweek as William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes and Cristhian Mosquera missed the match.
However, Arsenal have covered themselves by signing versatile players who are fully capable of operating in several positions, with this making the injury excuse invalid.
And Arteta himself has acknowledged this…
“It comes down to the mentality of the players, the intelligence of a player like Christian [Norgaard] – how to fulfil a role when in the morning you tell him that he needs to play in that position because we don’t have anyone else to play there,” Arteta added.
“We have a lot of examples of players playing in different positions, like Mikel Merino. It gives us an edge.”
