Italy hope Riccardo Calafiori will be fit for their final World Cup qualifier with Norway on Sunday, in a major injury boost for Arsenal

Reports in Italy have suggested Calafiori is managing hip pain and the defender is not expected to play against Moldova on Thursday, although he has been named in the squad for the game.

But his hip issue is not thought to be serious and Arsenal hope he will be fine to face Tottenham in the north London derby in their first game after the international break on November 23.

Having been named in the travelling Italy squad for their game in Moldova, Calafiori has been praised by boss Gennaro Gattuso.

“I have to thank the likes of [Nicolo] Barella, Calafiori and [Alessandro] Bastoni for being here, as it was by no means to be taken for granted,” he said.

“I congratulate the lads for their professionalism and hunger, which they show every day.”

Calafiori has started every Premier League game for the Arsenal this season and has been a key part of their strong start under Mikel Arteta.

In total, the 23-year-old has made 12 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions this season.

Gattuso has revealed Italy will make changes against Moldova, with Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario set to start ahead of Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Italy are preparing for a World Cup play-off in March, with hopes of automatic qualification due to Norway’s vastly superior goal difference.

“I can confirm that there will be many changes, but without any problems or fears,” said Gattuso.

“I have great faith in my players; they all deserve a night like tomorrow’s. I want to thank the group because I thought certain things could happen.

“I have to thank them for how they’ve handled these first few days, and for me that means a lot.

“The train has left and is moving, and tomorrow I definitely expect us to continue to grow strongly in what we’re doing.”
