There is a sense of anxiety in London. Arsenal fans know that this summer could make the difference between fighting for the top spot or watching from afar. They have spent years looking for a striker who really fits their forward line. The squad has improved on almost all fronts, but without a reliable number nine, they have faced issues with consistent goal scoring.
Amid rumours and names coming and going, Mikel Arteta remained patient. He wanted the right one, not just anyone. While other clubs were closing deals, the Gunners seemed to be thinking carefully about every move. Today, with Gyokeres in their sights, it seems that the wait has paid off. The Emirates is getting ready to welcome him.

According to information from Football Insider, Arsenal are confident of reaching an agreement to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon. They have been following him for months, aware that his profile could solve a prolonged drought. The 27-year-old Swede has scored 97 goals in 102 games for the Portuguese club since leaving Coventry City in 2023. The deal is in its final stages, with only the payment structure details remaining to be finalised. Benjamin Sesko was also considered, but Arteta and his team ultimately opted for the Swede. The official announcement is pending, but everything points to it being a matter of days.
So, is it the right decision to choose Gyokeres over Sesko? In my opinion, yes. Gyokeres offers something that Arsenal urgently needed, and that is a guarantee of immediate goals. His average in Portugal speaks for itself. Sesko may have a higher potential in the future, but Arteta cannot live on promises. He needs goals now. In addition, the Swede not only brings numbers, but also the physicality and character to withstand tight defences, something that the Premier League demands.
The pressure on his shoulders will be great, no doubt. The fans want to close the gap with Liverpool and Manchester City. It is not enough to fight until April. They have to hold on until May. Gyokeres arrives at his best, aware that London is unforgiving. Not everything will depend on him, of course, but his arrival gives a dose of faith to a crowd that demands titles.
If he fits in quickly, he can become an idol. If not, it will be another failed story. That is why this risky but courageous choice shows that Arsenal have learned something from their old mistakes, and that is not to sign promising players who will mature in three years, but finished products that can change games from August onwards.
