Ruben Amorim still believes that Manchester United’s best performance this season was their 1-0 loss to Arsenal despite wins against Liverpool and Brighton in recent weeks.

The Portguese manager’s side beat Brighton 4-2 at Old Trafford with a first goal of the season from Matheus Cunha, two from Bryan Mbuemo and one from Casemiro.

This win comes just a week after United beat rivals Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield with a late winner from Harry Maguire.

Amorim, however, still does not believe that either of those matches were their strongest performances of the season.

“I think they are more confident,” he said when asked if this is the best United have been this season. “I think the best game that we did this season was against Arsenal, was the first one.

“But, then when you are a little bit more confident, when you have a different spirit, sometimes you have a little bit of luck in certain moments of the game that help you to win games.”

The win against Brighton is United’s third win in a row – the longest win streak the club have had since Amorim took over. The Red Devil’s boss reflected on the importance of the victory.

“It was really important, so was the performance,” he said. “We had to play different games in different moments of the game and I think the players understood really well what to do in every moment.

“We suffered a little bit in the end, but it would not be Manchester United without suffering a little bit, but I think we deserved the win against a very, very good team, a team that is really hard to press really high. We did well.”

Amorim’s time as United manager has been full of challenges, including a loss to Grimsby, a 15th placed Premier League finish and losing the Europa League final to Tottenham but he still always believed that he had the faith of the United owner Jim Ratcliffe.

“I never had that feeling of embarrassment of what I was doing or not winning games. It’s more with the fans, because I felt always that Jim believes and knows what we are doing.

“But to face the fans is a little bit different in this moment. What I feel is the urgency of not losing this moment, because it’s so hard and in football, everything can change in one week. So let’s enjoy today and focus on the next one.”
