Jorginho’s time in north London looks set to conclude with a quiet departure, not with fanfare, but with dignity. According to The Daily Mail, Brazilian side Flamengo are close to securing the 33-year-old on a free transfer—months after an initial approach was made back in December.
It marks a natural turning point for a player who arrived at Arsenal from Chelsea for £12million in 2023, offering leadership and tactical clarity in Arteta’s evolving midfield. Now, with Flamengo circling and Arsenal advancing in their pursuit of Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi for £60m, the Gunners’ reshaping continues apace.

Despite a punctured lung injury against Brentford last month, Jorginho’s influence this season cannot be discounted. He’s featured 26 times in all competitions, scored once, and remains a player respected by those inside London Colney.
“Earlier this season, Mikel Arteta lavished praise on the veteran for helping to ‘make others better’ and being ready to play when called upon.” The Spaniard was clear in his appreciation of Jorginho’s influence:“That is his quality,” Arteta said. “I always mention his biggest quality is his capacity to make others better. Last season was the same.”
With talks already underway over a new deal for Thomas Partey, and Zubimendi close to arriving, Arsenal’s midfield is undergoing a significant transformation. Jorginho’s calm presence and deep experience were valued, but this is a squad evolving to meet higher demands.
“At the start there was less games, we don’t play that many midweek matches and he had less minutes.”Arteta added: “But I told him to be ready because there is going to be a time, and it is not going to be in one week you have to play, you are going to play now or tomorrow. The way he prepares is top so when he needs to play he is ready.”
Jorginho may not have become a weekly starter, but his leadership, technical intelligence and willingness to step in without fuss represent the professionalism Mikel Arteta prizes. His exit, if confirmed, will allow for a clean midfield refresh while honouring a respected servant.
If Jorginho does leave on a free, it feels like the right move for both club and player. His signing raised eyebrows back in 2023, but he’s brought calm when chaos loomed. That said, his influence was always more tactical than physical—less about pace and more about positioning.
Now with Zubimendi potentially incoming, there’s a genuine buzz. This is a player who could offer the perfect blend of Partey’s defensive bite and Jorginho’s intelligence. Add in a possible contract extension for Partey, and Arsenal’s midfield finally looks like it’s moving from makeshift to masterclass.
Still, credit where it’s due—Jorginho gave us vital minutes, particularly in pressure games. While some fans were sceptical of his Chelsea past, he won many over with sheer professionalism.
Letting him go with grace, not grumbles, shows Arsenal are handling transitions the right way. With Champions League nights returning, we need legs and ambition in equal measure. Jorginho gave us stability; now it’s time to add dynamism.
