Spaniard is expected to take his Gunners tenure beyond a decade

Mikel Arteta has reportedly agreed a new and improved Arsenal contract after steering the club to its first Premier League title for 22 years.

The Spaniard has been in charge of the club since December 2019, when he replaced Unai Emery, and he has built the side into one of the game’s most formidable teams.

Last season he edged Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, clinching the Premier League title by a seven-point margin before falling short of Champions League glory, losing on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain in the final.

The 2026/27 campaign, though, was the last of his previous deal, and per BBC Sport, he has now signed a new long-term extension which is expected to take his tenure with the club beyond a decade.

His new deal is understood to include an upgrade on the terms of his previous contract, which was reportedly worth £10m per year plus bonuses. He is expected to become one of the best-paid managers in world football.

There were never any serious concerns Arteta would not agree a new deal, but for Arsenal to tie him down is seen as a massive boost for the club as they look to continue their upward trend in pursuit of European dominance.

Speaking in early September, Arteta revealed a desire to make Arsenal the best football club in the world once he had put pen to paper on a new deal.

"Obviously we have to have a mid, long-term version,” he explained. “That is to build to the best club in the world. That has to be without any question of doubt what we have to do.

"In order to achieve that, there's a lot of things you have to do daily to give you the probability to achieve that.

"Then you have to rely so much on people. First of all our owners and the fantastic motivation and ambition that they have to take this club to that point.

"Then the level of connection you build within the staff, within the players and especially our supporters to build the right environment, the right ecosystem around it. Everybody aligned with the same ambition."
