Fresh off their Premier League title triumph, Arsenal are already setting their sights on defending their crown.

The Gunners have reportedly reignited interest in Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, who faces an uncertain future at St James’ Park. Mikel Arteta’s side previously explored a deal for Tonali in January following a long-term injury to Mikel Merino.

While the winter window ultimately prevented a transfer, preliminary discussions have now resumed between the Emirates Stadium club and Newcastle to outline the financial parameters of a potential summer move.

The sporting rationale behind Arsenal’s pursuit is clear. Throughout a demanding campaign, the north London side relied heavily on Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi.

Signing a player of Tonali’s profile—a dynamic, box-to-box midfielder with elite technical quality—would provide crucial rotation and ease the physical burden on Rice.

A deal will not be straightforward. Newcastle’s disappointing season means they are set to miss out on Champions League football, which has reportedly triggered a “gentleman’s agreement” allowing Tonali to seek an exit.

However, the Magpies will not let their prized asset leave cheaply and are expected to demand a premium fee, with figures between £70m and £86m (€100m) being quoted.

Furthermore, Arsenal could face stiff competition in the market. Manchester United have also identified Tonali as a primary target to spearhead their own midfield rebuild.

For Arsenal, landing Tonali, who is ‘better than Rice’, would send a powerful statement to the rest of Europe. Adding his tactical versatility to an already elite spine of Rice, Zubimendi, and Martin Odegaard would give Arteta the depth needed to compete for both the Premier League and Champions League next season.
