The Arsenal head coach’s double substitution proved to be the telling moment of the Women’s Champions League final
Renee Slegers says Arsenal’s victory in the Women's Champions League final means so much to the club.
Against all odds, Arsenal were crowned champions of Europe for the first time since 2007 as they beat Barcelona whom many claim to be the best team in women's football.
The Gunners had gone into the game having conceded 12 goals in the three games after booking their place in the final.
Though, an impressive defensive showing - lead by Leah Williamson - kept free-scoring Barcelona largely at bay and created a platform where one goal was enough to seal a famous win.
That vital moment arrived in the 74th minute as substitutes Beth Mead and Stina Blackstenius combined for a goal that will live long in the memory of the football club.
Discussing the impact of the double substitution, Slegers said the entire playing and coaching staff had a role to play in Lisbon.
Speaking to TNT Sports, she said: "We knew that decision making was going to be key, for the players on the pitch and us as staff.
"The whole staff has prepared everything so well with so much detail that and we knew in the moment we had to make the decision from the side line.
"What to do, what not to do, what to change and what nor to change. The ones on the field, the ones that came in, everyone did so well."

Arsenal will now celebrate amid suggestions from Ian Wright for a trophy parade next week, but head coach Slegers believes the win is a just reward for the club given their importance to the women’s game
She added: "It means so much to the club. They have been world leading in so many things in women's football that they deserve it.
“Not only this year but many years before so it's fantastic."
