Jonathan David (25) will soon have a decision to make regarding his future. The Canadian’s contract at Lille OSC expires at the end of the season and there is not expected to be a renewal.
One of the most consistent and prolific goalscorers in Ligue 1 in recent history will therefore be available on a free transfer come the summer. He is not short of suitors. As revealed by Sacha Tavolieri, West Ham United have made David their priority target. The Premier League side are hoping to outbid Barcelona, who are also in the race to sign the centre-forward, by proposing an offer worth €20m (agent commission, salary, bonuses) – a considerable outlay on a “free” agent. Barcelona are not able to match such an offer.
For now, only West Ham have made concrete steps to secure David’s signature, however, more competition is expected. According to Tavolieri, other English clubs are expected at the negotiating table, including Arsenal. The Gunners’ offer is expected to come within the next few weeks, after the officialisation of the arrival of prospective new sporting director Andrea Berta.
