Gunners outscored Barcelona in the league phase
Diego Simeone says Barcelona have “the best attack in Europe”, snubbing Arsenal in the process.
Atletico Madrid will face their LaLiga rivals in the Champions League quarter-finals after overcoming Tottenham 7-5 on aggregate in the last-16.
Barcelona, meanwhile, ran riot in their second leg against Newcastle, scoring four unanswered second half goals to run out 7-2 winners at the Camp Nou and 8-3 on aggregate.
Robert Lewandowski made history by becoming the oldest-ever scorer in the Champions League knockout stage, while Raphinha, Lamine Yamal, Fermin Lopez and Marc Bernal were also on target.
Those eight goals across the two games means Barca have now scored 30 goals in this season’s Champions League, though they were trailing Arsenal by one after last week’s first legs.
The Gunners netted 23 times in the league phase, the most of any team in the competition, four of which came against Atletico but Simeone is in no doubt that Barcelona have the best attack.
"We will try to compete with Barcelona, which is the team we will face. I repeat, they have the best attack in Europe,” Simeone told reporters after Atletico’s 3-2 second leg loss to Tottenham.
“The opportunity to play in the quarter-finals is of the highest level and it will require this level from us.
“This is a moment to be happy. As a club, as a team, we’re thrilled that our fans will celebrate this passage to the quarter-finals.
“The road ahead will be tough once you reach the quarterfinals, just like in our previous appearances.”

Atletico did eliminate Barcelona from the Copa del Rey this month, winning the first leg 4-0 before surviving a massive scare in the second leg as they lost 3-0 but progressed 403 on aggregate.
The winners of their Champions League quarter-final tie will progress to the semi-finals, potentially facing Arsenal who must overcome Sporting CP next month.
