Max Dowman experienced both sides of international football on Friday as the Arsenal youngster provided an assist before being sent off during England Under-19s’ 2-1 victory over the United States in Spain.

Dowman had already made his mark on the contest before his afternoon ended prematurely, creating England’s opening goal for Reigan Heskey.

Dowman makes an impact before seeing red

According to The Sun, Dowman was shown a straight red card in the 73rd minute following what was described as a reckless challenge.

The report suggests the youngster had been on the receiving end of several strong tackles during the game before frustration appeared to get the better of him.

England were nevertheless able to hold on with ten men and secure a 2-1 victory, with Arsenal academy teammate Ife Ibrahim introduced as the Young Lions reorganised following Dowman’s dismissal.

Importantly, the red card came in a friendly, meaning Dowman remains eligible for England’s next game against Belgium.

Another learning experience for Arsenal youngster

It is another significant experience in what has already been a remarkable period for the teenager.

Dowman recently scored twice as Arsenal beat Ipswich Town 4-2 in the Carabao Cup, earning further praise after taking his opportunity in Mikel Arteta’s senior side.

England are also taking a careful approach to his development. We recently discussed whether the national team are right to protect Dowman from too much hype, despite his continued rise through the age groups.

Friday offered another reminder that development is not always straightforward.

An assist demonstrated once again what Dowman can offer going forward, while the dismissal provides another moment for a hugely talented young player to learn from.

For Arsenal, the most important thing remains ensuring he continues developing without unnecessary pressure being placed on his shoulders.

What did you make of Dowman’s eventful afternoon? Is this simply part of the learning process for a young player developing so quickly? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
