Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says that Myles Lewis-Skelly has “proven he can compete” after being handed his first Premier League start.

The 18-year-old defender has broken into the Gunners’ first team this season after coming through the academy, making two top-flight appearances off the bench before this weekend.

The youngster has also made three appearances in the Uefa Champions League and two in the League Cup, starting one game in each competition.

With Riccardo Calafiori ruled out of Arsenal‘s clash with Everton, Arteta has turned to Lewis-Skelly as his starting left-back for the game at the Emirates Stadium.

“He’s been a player who has been with us since the pre-season,” the Basque native said ahead of kick-off.

“He’s proven that he can compete and play at the highest level. He did it in the midweek for a period of the game and he did really well. He’s got another chance today and I am sure he is going to compete well again.”
