Cecily Wellesley-Smith joins Rosengard

Arsenal’s Cecily Wellesley-Smith spent the first half of this season on loan at Leicester in the WSL.

After making just one appearance for the Foxes during her first six months at the club, Arsenal decided to recall their star from her time away.

The teenager returned home due to getting no game time on loan and so it was no great shock to see Wellesley-Smith sent out to another team.

In a big move for the 19-year-old, Wellesley-Smith has moved abroad for the first time in her career.

The defender spoke highly of her new club, with Arsenal teammates singing the praises of Rosengard.

“I think it is a good opportunity”, she said. “The Swedish league is good and I’ve heard good things from other teammates, Swedish players from Arsenal like Stina, Smilla, say good things about the league and everything.

“I’m just excited to be here, excited to play and can’t wait to get started.”

Wellesley-Smith is sure to have a bright future at Arsenal. The teen’s parent club will be hoping that the experience she gains abroad will put her in good stead to challenge for a position in the team next year.

Rosengard welcome new star

Upon her arrival in Sweden, Wellesley-Smith received a warm welcome from her new club.

“Cecily is a centre-back with poise and game intelligence.” Rosengard said in a statement. “She is strong in the duel game, secure in positioning and confident with the ball. A leader in the back line who sets the tone – both defensively and in the build-up – and who can also be an offensive threat.”

Wellesley-Smith: Future Lioness?

Despite being just 19-years-old, Cecily Wellesley-Smith is already expected to go on to big things.

The teenager has represented England under-17’s at both the European Championship and the World Cup.

Last year the Arsenal star earned her first call-up to the under-19’s.

If things go well in Sweden, it is surely only a matter of time before Wellesley-Smith gets called up to Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses squad.
