Arsenal are being linked with a sensational attempt to land Julián Alvarez via a part-exchange involving Viktor Gyökeres, but the likelihood of a swap is unclear.

Sport reports that Arsenal are considering offering Gyökeres plus around €80m (£68.5m) to Atlético Madrid to secure the Argentine forward.

Gyökeres endured a mixed first season after a £55m move from Sporting, scoring 21 goals in 55 games but fading in key moments. On paper a trade could suit all parties, yet there is no strong corroboration and there are rival claims that Gyökeres could instead head to Barcelona. Atlético are also understood to be unwilling to sell Alvarez to a domestic rival.

Atlético had long insisted Alvarez would stay, but their stance appears to be softening. He was benched against Villarreal at the weekend amid a deteriorating relationship with staff, then was booed after coming on in a 2-2 draw. A sale is thought possible if an asking price in the region of £125-130m is met, and Atlético have spoken to alternatives including Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson and Club Brugge’s Nicolò Tresoldi.

Arsenal look the likeliest club to match that valuation, though it depends on their appetite to spend. A direct swap featuring Gyökeres appears improbable, but Alvarez to Arsenal remains plausible before the deadline, with plenty still to negotiate and no agreement in place.
