Former Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos has faced Real Madrid twice in his career, and the Switzerland native has never lost a game against Los Blancos.

He was a part of the Arsenal squad that historically eliminated Real Madrid from the UEFA Champions League round of 16 during the 2005/06 season.

Now, almost 20 years later, Arsenal are up against the record European champions and like their previous meeting, they have the advantage going into the second leg, albeit this time, the margin is 3-0.

Speaking ahead of the contest at Santiago Bernabeu, Senderos spoke to AS, where he reflected on several matters.

The 40-year-old was asked about his take on Real Madrid’s potential comeback and he certainly did not back out from warning from his former side, stating that many champions have failed at the Bernabeu.

“Anyone who knows a bit about football history knows that the Bernabeu is a special place. Many champions have played there and lost there.

“When you are there, you feel the aura of Real Madrid. It’s the weight of history and legendary stadiums. It was similar when I played the second leg of a tie with Arsenal at the old Highbury.”

Arsenal will feel the pressure

A lot has been said about the environment of the venue and Senderos stands firm on his ideas that just like other teams, Arsenal will feel the pressure too.

“They’re sure to feel some pressure despite the favorable result. Arsenal is a very well-trained team and will be learning their lessons, but if there’s one team that can turn around a scoreline like that, it’s Real Madrid at home.”

The former midfielder reiterated that although Real Madrid’s comeback seems difficult, it cannot be ruled out altogether.

“Maybe [the comeback is difficult], but with Madrid’s stars, anything is possible.

“They have impressive quality and if there is one thing we know, it is that in their stadium and with their fans, they won’t give up as long as there’s a chance of going ahead.

“The fans are going to push and a first goal can change the panorama. They can do it,” he noted.
