Arsenal were close to submitting a major bid for Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah before agreeing a deal for Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa, according to Sky Germany.

The Premier League champions are said to have made a verbal proposal worth €60 million plus €five million in bonuses. Leverkusen rejected it, insisting the centre-half was not for sale.

Quansah joined from Liverpool last summer for €35 million and quickly became a regular starter for Leverkusen.

The 23-year-old was part of England’s World Cup squad. His contract with Leverkusen runs until 2030.

Liverpool had a €60 million buy-back clause that expired this summer, and the option will be available again next summer.
