It was a crucial match for both sides, with Chelsea looking to extend their lead at the top of the WSL. The Gunners, meanwhile, were desperate to claw back some ground in the title race.

But it was the worst possible start for the hosts, who were undone by Chelsea’s game plan and, rather than weathering the early pressure, they conceded inside the opening 10 minutes.

Chelsea’s summer signing Alyssa Thompson finally netted her first WSL goal after a clever one-two with Johanna Rytting Kaneryd, lifting an audacious effort over Daphne van Domselaar and into the back of the net.

Scorers: Russo 87' ; Thompson 8'

The visitors started the second half the stronger of the two sides, with Lotte Wubben-Moy making two crucial blocks to deny Wieke Kaptein, before Van Domselaar kept out an effort from Niamh Charles.

Arsenal thought they had found an equaliser when Stina Blackstenius found the net from a corner, but it was controversially ruled out for handball and replays showed the striker had actually controlled the ball with her thigh.

The Gunners did eventually find an equaliser in the final five minutes, with Frida Maanum’s cross met by a composed finish from Alessia Russo.

Maanum then thought she had got herself on the scoresheet after an Arsenal break, but the goal was ruled out for offside as the clock ticked into added time.

The points were ultimately shared, with Chelsea moving onto 20 points at the top of the table and giving Manchester City the chance to move into first with a win over Everton on Sunday.
