Arsenal‘s hopes of securing 16-year-old Chelsea prospect Ryan McAidoo have been dashed as Manchester City have reportedly agreed a deal to sign the highly-rated young forward.

Despite Arsenal being in pole position for several months and reportedly offering the “best project proposal,” Manchester City’s late intervention proved decisive, leaving the Gunners frustrated.

Fabrizio Romano initially reported Arsenal’s leading position, stating, “Arsenal made proposal and they are currently leading the race to sign Ryan McAidoo, 2008 born talented forward. He’s expected to leave Chelsea this summer; best project proposal so far came from Arsenal.”

However, Romano’s most recent update reveals that Manchester City outmanoeuvred several Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, to “hijack” McAidoo’s signature for their academy. The deal is a blow to Arsenal, who were keen to strengthen their youth ranks with the promising forward.

McAidoo, who has represented England at U17 level and made appearances for Chelsea’s U18 side, is considered a gem of English football. His impressive skills, including ball control, speed, precise passing, and shooting, have seen a host of top clubs race to sign him.

His friendship with Arsenal‘s Ethan Nwaneri, whom he replaced as a substitute in both of his appearances for the England U17 team, further fuelled speculation of a move to the Emirates.

However, Manchester City’s successful bid highlights the fierce competition for young talent in English football and how hard it is to compete with City’s might.

Despite that, for Manchester City, the acquisition of McAidoo still represents something of a coup. McAidoo will now have the opportunity to develop his skills at the Etihad Campus under the guidance Manchester City’s coaching staff. With Guardiola expected to leave next summer, it’s unlikely McAidoo will ever get to work with him.

While Arsenal may be disappointed to miss out on McAidoo, they will continue their search for young talent to strengthen their academy and first team. The competition for the next generation of stars is fierce, but City can’t sign them all!
