Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly has named a current Tottenham Hotspur player as the toughest opponent he has faced in the Premier League.

"Mateus Fernandes, when he was at West Ham," Lewis-Skelly said on the Men In Blazers podcast.

The 19-year-old has risen quickly under Mikel Arteta. He already has a Premier League winner’s medal, a Champions League final start, 81 senior appearances and six England caps across defence and midfield.

"Bruno brings energy, experience, intensity," the England international said. "When I heard he was joining I was super happy because it’s someone to learn from and pick the brain of."

Fernandes endured relegations with Southampton and West Ham before an £85 million summer switch to Tottenham. His start under Roberto De Zerbi has been uneven, including a half-time withdrawal for Mohammed Kudus in a 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa. De Zerbi has said he trusts him but did not like that display and expects more.

With Bruno Guimaraes now at Arsenal, Lewis-Skelly accepts fierce competition and still sees himself centrally despite breaking through at left-back. "I’m a midfielder. But at the end of the day it’s all down to the team needs."
