Mikel Arteta has reflected on Arsenal’s recent struggles, emphasizing that their strong performances alone aren’t enough if they aren’t converting them into wins. Despite dominating their recent Champions League clash against Inter Milan, Arsenal left empty-handed, losing due to a contentious penalty decision against Mikel Merino. This result continued a difficult run for the Gunners, who are now facing back-to-back losses ahead of an important clash against Chelsea this weekend.
Arteta acknowledged that while Arsenal outplayed Inter Milan, controlling the match from start to finish, their failure to capitalise on chances ultimately cost them the game. Speaking to Arsenal Media, Arteta highlighted the disconnect between performing well and securing wins: “What I sense as well is a big belief about how good we are as a team, and again what we did in Milan watching it back twice, I hadn’t seen my team doing that against them.” He continued by underscoring the importance of turning these efforts into results, stating, “But you need to take that into a winning football match because, in the end, that is the only thing that anybody is going to judge, not how superior you were to the opponent, that you outrun the opponent, you out-performed the opponent in every single way. It is about how they scored a goal and you didn’t.”

Arteta’s remarks reveal a pressing need to find solutions in attack, as Arsenal’s lack of goals has been a recurring issue this season. He stressed that winning ultimately comes down to “scoring more goals than the opponent,” and without that, strong performances lose their impact. Arteta’s emphasis on translating effort into tangible outcomes shows he is determined to get the team back to winning form, recognising that Arsenal must be more clinical in front of goal.
As Arsenal prepares for their match against Chelsea, Arteta sees the derby as a critical opportunity to break the cycle of missed chances and regain their confidence. A win over a major rival like Chelsea could reignite their season and bolster their morale going forward. This is a pivotal moment, and Arteta’s focus on converting chances into victories will be essential if Arsenal hopes to turn their season around.
