Arsenal’s 1-0 win at West Ham was overshadowed by an awkward episode for Martín Zubimendi, who was brought on then taken off as Mikel Arteta defended a cool-headed call to protect the result.
He replaced the injured Ben White on 28 minutes, then made way for Kai Havertz on 67. According to Diario Vasco, Arteta admitted the decision was tough but insisted the team’s needs came first, adding that he had to remain calm and follow what the game required.
The manager explained that shifting Declan Rice to right-back after White’s injury unsettled Arsenal’s balance. To break the deadlock, he introduced more attacking profiles, sacrificing the former Real Sociedad midfielder.
This comes during Zubimendi’s most testing spell in north London, with three successive starts on the bench. Academy talent Myles Lewis-Skelly has begun to nibble at his minutes as the title race with Manchester City enters its decisive stretch.
Even so, the Spain international has produced a personal best for goal involvement, with six goals and three assists in 54 appearances. He remains third for minutes played in the squad, behind David Raya and Declan Rice.
Arsenal spent around 70 million euros to sign him last summer at Arteta’s request, identifying him as a pivotal piece for a title push. Early on, Arteta praised his control, tactical nous, humility and focus, and the speed with which he earned dressing-room respect.
What was a seamless tactical union now faces its first real examination amid the Premier League’s demands.
