Mikel Arteta has hailed the phenomenal effort from his Arsenal players after two massive wins in a week.
Arsenal secured a 1-0 win at West Ham in the Premier League on Sunday to take a step closer to the Premier League title.
Leandro Trossard’s late goal earned the Gunners all three points, though the North Londoners were forced to survive a late scare, as West Ham had a stoppage-time equaliser ruled out after a VAR check.
The result restored Arsenal’s five-point lead in the title race and leaves Arteta’s side two wins from the crown. It followed a hard-fought 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid in midweek, that saw Arsenal progress to the Champions League final for the first time since 2006. Arteta was keen to hail the ‘phenomenal’ efforts from his squad.
“They’ve been phenomenal,” he said. “The courage, determination and quality they’ve shown all week as well, there’s so much at stake with everything we’ve done for 10 months, and now is the moment that matters.
“The beauty of that is that we haven’t done it alone, we’ve done it with our supporters and they’ve been phenomenal, incredible. You can see what they’ve done today in this stadium yet again, so thank you, so, so much – it feels like a big moment.
“It’s been an incredible afternoon, and an incredible week – what a moment. The game had everything you’d expect from two teams that are fighting for their lives for two very different objectives, but with the same commitment. I think it was a really top match.”
