Arsenal face PSV in the first leg of the Champions League on Wednesday night and Mikel Arteta has urged his side to leave behind any feelings of diappointment from their Premier League form.
Arsenal have won one of their last three league games and seen the deficit to Liverpool grow to 13 points, an amount that seems insurmountable at this stage of the campaign.
The Gunners have been through a tough time, but Arteta was keen to reinforce that the feeling of dropped points cannot linger: “The moment you have a (bad) result, it hurts but it has to last 24 hours. Because then you have to move on and you have to face the next game and the preparation.
“You cannot get away from that. That is a big quality of a coach or any player at this level because in three days time you are going to have another match and you emotionally and physically you have to be ready for it.”
The Champions League may represent a chance for Arsenal to forget about their league and EFL Cup disappointments, which the Spaniard agreed with: “It’s a game that brings a different energy. It’s a competition that puts everyone on their toes.
“We have already done a lot this season and now is the moment to make strong steps in the direction that we want to. I’m very excited for the game….
“What is ahead is a team that has eliminated a team like Juventus with their history. I know their difficulty, we have played against them a lot in recent years, and we know the difficulty of the match.”
PSV are also in poor domestic form, with no wins in their last four games, but they have eliminated Juventus, and are one of only four teams this season to have beaten Liverpool.
Arteta will know how tough tomorrow’s game will be, especially given Arsenal’s goalscoring woes of late.
