Arturo Ruiz has unilaterally ended his Real Sociedad contract, the day after overseeing Wednesday’s 5-2 first-leg defeat at Chelsea in the Champions League third qualifying round. His deal had been due to run until 2027.
The club said he has paid the compensation stipulated in his contract to make the unilateral termination effective. There is an expectation that a financially strong club will announce his hiring soon.
Ruiz began coaching in 2015 at Club Unión Zona Norte in Madrid, then worked at Leganés and Santa Ana before joining Atlético de Madrid’s academy in 2020. He rose from youth level to the C team, quickly emerging in Liga F.
He took charge of Atlético’s first team with nine league games left in 2023-24 and qualified them for the Champions League. In 2024-25 he led Granada to the best league and cup results in their history. In 2025-26 he impressed at Real Sociedad, guiding them into Europe, playing attractive football and beating Barcelona in the regular season.
Maider Castillo, alongside Fernando Torres, until now the assistant, and Aitor Resende, head coach of the B team, take charge of Real Sociedad. The squad trained on Thursday after the loss at Chelsea. The return leg is in Zubieta next Wednesday at 19:00, when they will try to overturn the first-leg deficit.
