Wrexham earned a big win last weekend in their bid for automatic promotion to League One this season.

The Welsh outfit earned a 2-0 home win against rivals Gillingham to maintain their position in second place in the table.

Goals from Ollie Palmer and Ben Tozer in the first and 71st minutes respectively earned the club all three points.

This victory made it three in a row for Phil Parkinson’s side, who are still just one point clear of fourth place Crewe Alexandra.

It was a big win for the team given the absences of key players Paul Mullins and James McClean.

How important was Wrexham’s win over Gillingham?

Carlton Palmer believes that Wrexham have what it takes to earn an automatic promotion spot in League Two this season.

He claimed that earning victory against the Gills without two very important parts of the team only shows just how far this team can go this campaign, in the middle of a very competitive battle at the top of the table.

“Wrexham have found their feet in League Two, five wins in their last six games, taking them up to second place, five points off the league leaders Stockport,” Palmer told Football League World.

“Parkinson’s side are genuine automatic promotion contenders, as I predicted before the start of the season.

“I felt that they just needed to find their feet in this league, make the necessary adjustments and they would kick on.

“Players in their team who played at a much higher level than League Two and they have owners who have huge resources.

“I expect them to invest heavily again in the January transfer window, and the win against Gillingham on Saturday was without Paul Mullins and James McClean, that shows you how strong they are looking at present.”

Wrexham earned promotion to the Football League last season with an impressive 111-points tally in the National League.

The club has become the centre of attention due to their Hollywood owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, but results on the pitch have been quite impressive since their takeover was completed.

The Red Dragons are seeking back-to-back promotions to earn their place back in League One.

The last time Wrexham competed in the third tier of English football was the 2004-05 season.

The gap to leaders Stockport County is now five points after the opening 17 games of the term.

Next up for Parkinson’s side is a trip to face Accrington Stanley on 18 November.
