AS Vaux, a century-old village side from Vaux-lès-Saint-Claude in the Haut Jura, have reached the Coupe de France second round and face Petite-Montagne on Sunday. Le Progres reports that the Départemental 3 team are built around a young group and a returning coach bringing more rigour.

In June, the Jaune et Bleu reached the departmental cup final, losing 4-1 to Plateau 39, and secured survival at the end of the campaign.

They advanced last week by beating Jura Stade 1-0, keeping the ball, scoring midway through the second half and then holding firm.

Founded in 1912, the club is among the area’s oldest and thrives on a family, rural feel despite sitting three kilometres from Jura Sud. With around 40 licence-holders, enjoyment comes before results, president Franck Derivière said.

AS Vaux are known for being combative, with what Derivière calls a warrior mindset. Cataldo wants to sharpen the image, curbing complaints towards referees and opponents and keeping behaviour within the sporting frame.

They would like to climb to D2, although Cataldo accepts that could take longer given a small squad. A shortage of referees means the club cannot register transferred players, so they seek those without licences last season.

Petite-Montagne sit in D1, two levels above, and the coach expects an athletic side that runs and has some technical players. If the cup run continues it would be a bonus, with the league, attractive play and fun remaining the priorities.
