Aston Villa’s Marco Asensio joined a group of Premier League players on Saturday, missing two penalties against Southampton.

The Spaniard had the perfect chance to open the scoring against the league’s bottom side, who are already relegated, but his penalty was saved by Aaron Ramsdale in the 69th minute.

Despite Ollie Watkins and Donyell Malen coming to Asensio’s rescue with goals to put Villa comfortably ahead, the Spain international made sure he stayed in the headlines by missing a second penalty in stoppage time.

John McGinn netted Villa’s third in the rebound after, but it was still a game Asensio will want to forget. He’s now the fourth player to miss two penalties in a single Premier League game, joining a rather exclusive and unfortunate club.

The first player to do so was Juan Pablo Angel for Villa, who had both his penalties saved by Fulham’s Edwin van der Sar back in February 2005.

Heurelho Gomes pulled off the same feat in 2010 when he saved two from Darren Bent in a 2-0 win for Tottenham against Sunderland, and again in 2016 when he saved two from Saido Berahino while at Watford.

But Villa did end the match on a high as they also made Premier League history. With Ollie Watkins, Donyell Malen, and John McGinn all scoring after coming off the bench, Villa became the first team in the league’s history to have three substitutes find the net in the same match.
