Burnley midfielder Ashley Westwood is targeting a return from injury later this month when the club’s under 21’s side face Hull City.
The 32-year-old sustained an ankle injury back in April that has seen him miss the opening months of the season under Vincent Kompany.
However, he is now nearing a turn, revealing that he is aiming for 45 minutes of action when the Clarets youth side host Hull City’s equivalent on October 31st.
“I am getting there, I joined in the warm ups this week which has been amazing and it is taking it step by step,” Westwood explained on Clarets Plus, via LancsLive.
“I have a few boxes to tick as for the physios. I am up to speed and have to get used to the stiff ankle.
“I am frustratingly close, dipping in with training and I can’t quite do the contact yet. In a couple of weeks I will be in full training.

“The sports science boys are involved and I hate the gym so they’ve dragged me in there! It is paying off. I feel ready and mentally I feel ready.
“We have pencilled in the Hull game for the 21’s which is 45 minutes, that is what I am aiming for.”
It’s brilliant to hear that Ashley Westwood is nearing a return from injury.
If he can get those 45 minutes of action under his belt for Burnley’s under 21’s at the end of the month, he will surely be motivated to make his first team return soon after.
However, with the Championship set to pause for the Qatar World Cup after Burnley’s clash with Blackburn on the 13th November, you’d think that Westwood will likely return after that international break.
That could be a good thing though, as it allows the 32-year-old to essentially have a mini pre-season ahead of his return to first team action.
