Ashley Young was denied his first league goal in 18 months last weekend when his deflected effort against Brighton and Hove Albion was officially ruled a Lewis Dunk own goal.

That clearly gave him extra motivation.

The winger-cum-full-back scored a delightful first-half double for Manchester United in Tuesday’s Premier League match against Watford.

Watford will have been fully aware of Young’s quality. He joined the club as a ten-year-old, making his way through the youth teams before establishing himself in the first team.

In confident form, Young didn’t need any invitation to shoot when the ball fell to him on the edge of the box in the 19th minute.

He smashed it into the bottom corner to give United the lead.

But it turned out the first goal was just a warm-up.

Young managed to convince Paul Pogba to give him a chance at a free-kick a few minutes later after Pogba was fouled near the Watford penalty area.

And Young promptly stepped up and fired a whipped, curling effort into the top corner.

Heurelho Gomes was left helpless in the Watford goal and even José Mourinho was caught surprised on the Manchester United bench.

The brace was Young’s first in the league since 2012.
