AS Saint-Etienne will spend a second straight season in Ligue 2, their fourth in five years, after a 4-1 play-off defeat at Nice on Friday night. The fallout has been immediate in the city.
According to Le Progres, banners appeared across Saint-Etienne overnight into Saturday 30 May, aimed at Philippe Montanier’s players and the club’s leadership. The Kilmer project was also singled out.
The reverse arrived as the club marked the 50th anniversary of the Glasgow final, deepening the sense of deflation. For many, Jean-Michel Larqué’s favourite saying felt apt.
Supporters, and the city more broadly, showed a low mood and a figurative black armband. Anger towards the squad and the board has been plain.
For the Verts, the verdict is clear, Ligue 2 again next term. The reaction began on Friday and spilled into Saturday across the city with pointed messages.
