Former AS Saint-Étienne greats Pierre Repellini, Christian Sarramagna, Jacques Santini and Jean-Marc Schaer headlined the launch of L’Épopée mythique 1976, sharing memories of the club’s path to the European Cup final.
According to Le Progres, the event at Brasserie Geoffroy-Guichard drew devoted supporters who soaked up every story.
They charted the early steps, from a first win in Copenhagen in Denmark to victory over Rangers, recalling how opponents were given little chance. Sarramagna said the team took on a new dimension as Roger Rocher laid on a private plane, medical staff and even their own food for away trips.
Against Dynamo Kiev, Santini remembered a punishing first leg, with their hotel floor unheated and the temperature at minus 12C, and said the return at home became a point of pride.
Repellini reflected on the PSV Eindhoven tie and Robert Herbin’s physical sessions, described as novel at the time and so intense that such workloads might cost a coach his job today, yet they fostered total belief. At home, backed by their crowd, they felt like 12 on the pitch.
The tale reached its climax with the Glasgow final against Bayern Munich, the infamous square posts and a parade on the Champs-Élysées.
The 150-page book, produced by the newspaper with previously unseen photographs, goes on sale on Tuesday 21 April at its stockists, priced at €16.90.
