With the completion, finally, of the winter transfer window, let's review how the window went for Tottenham Hotspur when it comes to both incomings and outgoings.
This window, we saw the acquisitions of goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky from Sparta Prague, central defender Kevin Danso from RC Lens, and forward Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich. The signing of Kinsky was a permanent transfer, the signing of Danso was a loan with an obligation to buy, and the signing of Tel was a loan with an option to buy. We also saw Dane Scarlett return from loan at Oxford United.
As for outgoings, we saw winger Yang Min-hyeok (whom had technically arrived as a new signing, and was on the bench three times), join Queens Park Rangers on loan, whilst striker Will Lankshear joined West Bromwich Albion on loan.
So, certainly more incomings than outgoings. The three signings were all to make an impact in the starting XI, whilst Min-hyeok had not played for the club, and Lankshear had played very few minutes since the game at Galatasaray in the Europa League.
Overall, you would say it has generally been a successful window. The club were able to get competent cover for Guglielmo Vicario, bring in a very needed central defender, and a versatile forward whom will help Spurs not need to burn out their players.
It wasn't perfect, and there could have been deals done sooner. There weren't any outfield signings made in the month of January. With the season ending injury to Radu Dragusin, one more central defender would not have gone a miss, though that is being picky. The club are still without a pure defensive midfielder whom can put out fires, but that is hard to find in the winter - hopefully that is looked at again in the summer.
As for the outgoings, they don't make the first team squad any worse by leaving on loan, though you do just have to hope they are going to get regular minutes and starts. With Lankshear, a concern would be that West Brom have signed Adam Armstrong on loan from Southampton. In his last two seasons in the Championship, Armstrong has scored a total of 49 goals.
Fortunately, he can also play on the right wing, so there is the possibility they can co-exist. However, current right winger, Tom Fellows, has seriously impressed this season, and was the subject of interest from Everton this past window. There are already some concerns with this loan, though let's wait and see.
As for Min-hyeok, QPR have quite a lot of depth in wide areas - though he did look bright in a cameo last weekend. Spurs do not have the best record with Championship loans in general, though Ashley Phillips is generally having a good spell at Stoke City, so let's hope for more of the same.
Back to the signings. We don't need to go into much detail on Kinsky, having seen him for a few games now. With Danso, Spurs have signed a very mobile and front footed defender, who certainly fits the style of play. When it comes to Tel, Spurs have injected some serious pace and dynamism into their front three, for a player with a lot of potential and upside.
