Jonathan Rowe remains on the shortlists of both Aston Villa and Chelsea as the Premier League pair weigh up their attacking options.

The Bologna winger first drew interest from the two clubs in April, and initial discussions have been held with his representatives, according to Calciomercato. No formal approach to Bologna has yet been made.

Rowe is viewed as a potential replacement rather than a first-choice target. Villa could require a wide addition should Crysencio Summerville, who Roma favour, move to Selhurst Park’s Italian suitors, while Chelsea are assessing options if Alejandro Garnacho departs Stamford Bridge.

His price is already established. Bologna value the 23-year-old at between €40m and €45m, and have no intention of selling cheaply. His contract runs until June 2029, handing the Serie A side a strong negotiating position.

The English winger enjoyed a productive first season in Italy. Rowe scored eight goals and provided five assists, impressing with his pace, direct running and one-versus-one threat. He even netted against Villa in the Europa League quarter-final.

His temperament, however, has raised questions. Rowe was sent off for violent conduct in a pre-season friendly against Arminia Bielefeld, headbutting an opponent while Bologna trailed 3-0. He is expected to face internal discipline and a possible fine.

It is not the first such incident, either. Rowe arrived at Bologna from Marseille after a training-ground altercation with Adrien Rabiot, which prompted the French club to move him on at a reduced fee.

Bologna’s situation could yet force their hand. Having missed out on European football for next season, the Rossoblu may find a substantial offer difficult to reject, despite their wish to keep him.

His Premier League pedigree adds to the appeal. Rowe came through at Norwich and proved himself in the Championship before his move to Italy, and is understood to be open to a return to England.
