His passing numbers were sharp. An 85.5% completion rate across 3,000-plus passes tells you he is comfortable on the ball and has absorbed the ball-playing centre-back demands drilled into him during his years in the Manchester City academy. That technical foundation is exactly what Unai Emery needs. Villa’s system asks centre-backs to carry the ball confidently under pressure and build from the back with composure, and Harwood-Bellis gives them an ideal option.

Here is the problem, though. His only senior Premier League campaign, 2024/25, saw Southampton concede 65 goals in the 34 games he featured in. That is a catastrophic defensive record, and while the whole unit was a mess, it is impossible to separate him entirely from that context. Now Villa are asking him to replace Konsa, a proven top-flight defender who covered ground, commanded his box, and offered genuine right-back cover when required.

Harwood-Bellis does offer that same positional flexibility, which is valuable. But there is a real gap between Championship Player of the Year and Champions League-ready, and that gap is important.

Villa are splitting the Konsa windfall cleverly by spending only £25m now, which frees up capital for other squad reinforcements before the window shuts. Under Emery’s coaching, a technically gifted 24-year-old with an England senior cap already to his name can grow.
