Aston Villa close in on Wolves midfielder as Tielemans replacement | OneFootball

Aston Villa are close to signing Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes for a fee of £38m.

The midfielder is due to undergo a medical with Aston Villa on Thursday after leaving Wolves’ pre-season training camp.

Gomes had been expected to sign for Atletico Madrid, but Villa have now made their move after the Spanish side failed to finalise the transfers. Manchester United and Liverpool had also been linked with the 24-year-old.

Villa’s interest has emerged following the sale of Youri Tielemans, who has joined Manchester United for £36m. The Red Devils activated the release clause in Tielemans’ contract to sign the Belgium international.

Unai Emery is also set to be without Amadou Onana for the bulk of the campaign after the midfielder sustained an ACL injury at the World Cup.

Gomes is set to arrive to add depth, according to the BBC, while Villa are also pushing to finalise the transfer of Johan Manzambi from Freiburg. The Swiss starlet has agreed a club-record transfer to Villa Park.
