Mbaye is a Senegal international who spent last season on PSG’s first-team periphery. He made 24 Ligue 1 appearances, clocking 1,007 minutes, contributing 3 goals and 2 assists. He also featured four times in the Champions League. On the international stage, Mbaye earned 15 senior caps for Senegal, helped his country win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which was later awarded to Morocco, and on 16 June 2026 became Senegal’s youngest-ever goalscorer at a World Cup when he netted against France. Villa, who had been chasing Rafael Leão before that pursuit collapsed, ultimately turned to Mbaye as their preferred target.

Mbaye posted an 89% pass completion rate in Ligue 1 last season, an exceptionally high figure for a wide forward, not a deep-lying midfielder. His median pass release time sat at 2.00 seconds, putting him in the 79th percentile for patience in possession. What that tells you is that this isn’t a raw, run-at-defenders type. He reads the pitch, he holds the ball, and he picks his moment. Liverpool tracked him seriously before Villa moved. That alone says something.

Unai Emery’s system at Aston Villa asks wide players to do considerably more than hug the touchline. He operates a fluid 4-2-2-2 or 4-2-3-1 shape and demands his wide midfielders carry the ball into half-spaces, press compactly out of possession, and support the double pivot when Villa are without the ball. Mbaye gives him an ideal option.

After Morgan Rogers left for Chelsea for £117 million, Villa had a real gap on the right side. Mbaye slots directly into that vacancy, and Emery will likely use him as an inverted inside creator rather than a traditional winger, driving diagonally, combining with Nicolas Jackson in tight spaces, and freeing Villa’s full-backs to push forward. Defensively, his numbers hold up too. He recorded 14 tackles last season and contributed to clean sheets in 54% of the minutes he played for PSG, which is a strong figure for a winger of his age.

With a low centre of gravity, his physical profile suits close-control, high-tempo football at pace. The €55m price tag brings serious pressure for a teenager, but his retention metrics, his World Cup moment, and his tactical discipline suggest Emery may have found exactly the profile he needed.
