Aston Villa have been fined £19m for breaching UEFA financial rules last year, but will initially pay only a third after progress on cost cutting was recognised.

Villa must pay £6.3m now, with the remainder suspended if their finances continue to improve in 2026. UEFA said its CFCB First Chamber noted an improving squad cost ratio from 2024 to 2025 and made part of the sanction conditional on a further decrease next year.

It is the club’s second UEFA sanction in as many summers, following a £9.5m fine in 2025 for breaches of cost control and football earnings rules.

The latest case relates solely to cost control regulations, which cap spending on wages, transfer fees and agents’ fees at 70 per cent of revenue during the 2025 calendar year.

The total penalty amounts to 22m euros, the second largest issued to any club behind Strasbourg.

Villa entered a three-year settlement agreement with UEFA last summer and have remained in close contact with the governing body.
