Aston Villa are facing a serious battle to keep goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, with Juventus reportedly pushing to sign the Argentina international.
Those efforts are now being threatened even further, with Italian publication Gazzetta reporting that Martinez is also pushing for a move away from Villa.
Martinez’s future at Villa has been up in the air for weeks, but the experienced goalkeeper wanted to focus on his World Cup duties with Argentina.
La Albiceleste reached the final but were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Spain after extra time despite another outstanding performance from the Villa goalkeeper.
After helping his country finish second, conversations about Martinez’s future are back on the table, and recent developments have left Villa sweating.
The 33-year-old is a top target for Juventus, who are prepared to step up their efforts to lure the Argentine from Villa Park this summer.
Villa are reluctant to lose their number one shot-stopper, but Martinez wants to leave the club and is reportedly ready to play a big role in helping Juventus finalise the transfer.
Juventus have already agreed personal terms with Martinez. The experienced goalkeeper is set to sign a three-year contract worth around €5 million per season along with performance-related bonuses.
The Old Lady are now hoping Martinez will encourage Villa to negotiate a deal after expressing an interest in taking on a new challenge in Serie A.
The biggest obstacle to this deal is the transfer fee. Juventus want to pay around €6.5m to get it done, although it will be structured as an initial loan with an obligation to buy.
However, Villa are holding out for a fee closer to €10m before allowing Martinez to leave this summer.
Martinez still has two years on his contract, so Villa have a leg to stand on. It’s now up to Juventus to match their asking price, although Martinez’s desire to leave could force Villa’s hand.
If Juventus can’t agree a deal with Villa, they could pivot to Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who is also on their radar.
