The Red Dragons have enjoyed a remarkable rise through the English football pyramid in the last few years, going from the National League to the Championship in the shortest span possible.

Phil Parkinson’s side are now in the mix for a play-off place, which could give them the opportunity to gain promotion to the Premier League at the first attempt.

The Welsh outfit have never competed in the top flight of English football in their entire history, with this year being their first in the second tier since 1982.

Wrexham currently occupy a top six position, but they face stiff competition from the likes of Southampton, Derby County and Watford in the chasing pack.

The club have 11 games left to hold onto their position inside the top six, with the pressure set to ramp up in the coming weeks.

According to Talksport, Aston Villa are leading the race to sign Wrexham transfer target Harry Wilson.

It is believed that the Premier League side are emerging as his most likely next destination amid speculation over his future.

It is understood that the Red Dragons are keen on attempting to secure his signature, provided they can earn promotion to the Premier League.

Leeds United and Everton are also in the mix for the Fulham star, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the campaign.

However, it’s Aston Villa who are looking likeliest to secure his signature at this stage, with it being claimed that an exit from Craven Cottage is all but certain.

Wilson has earned a lot of plaudits this season for his performances, and it will come as no surprise that there are a number of clubs now interested in signing him.

The 28-year-old has contributed nine goals and six assists from 27 appearances in the Premier League this campaign, with Marco Silva’s side ninth in the table.

He scored last weekend as Fulham won 2-1 against relegation-threatened Tottenham Hotspur, further emphasising his importance to the London outfit.

But his contract is set to expire in the summer, meaning he could be available as a free agent, with Aston Villa potentially set to qualify for the Champions League.

Meanwhile, next up for Wrexham is a big FA Cup clash at home to Chelsea on 7 March in a 5.45pm kick-off.

Harry Wilson pursuit requires Premier League promotion

Wilson would be an excellent addition to Parkinson’s side, if they can convince him to join ahead of the likes of Villa or Everton.

However, Premier League football will be necessary to stand any kind of chance of winning the race to sign him given the competition Wrexham face.

If Aston Villa can also offer Champions League, or maybe even just Europa League, football then it will be very hard to compete with that kind of offer.

While Wilson has a personal connection to the Red Dragons due to being from the area, that will not be enough by itself to bring him to the Racecourse Ground next season.
