According to Fabrizio Romano, Aston Villa are back in active talks to re-sign Douglas Luiz, with negotiations continuing with Juventus, while Chelsea are exploring other midfield options.

The midfielder’s season-long loan at Nottingham Forest includes a conditional, appearance-based obligation to buy. Fifteen league outings of 45 minutes or more would trigger a reported £22 million clause.

With the Reds seemingly unlikely to meet that threshold, Chelsea interest has been noted, although a Villa Park return is also on the table. Luiz made 175 league appearances across five years there before leaving for Italy.

Luiz was not in the squad for Forest’s 2-0 win at Brentford on Sunday. He had started the 1-0 Europa League defeat at Braga last week, but illness kept him out of the trip to the capital.

Sean Dyche said the club removed him from the camp to reduce the risk of a flu-like bug spreading during travel and hopes he will recover quickly. Asked if Luiz will remain part of the squad, he replied that they would see.
