Natalia Arroyo and Aston Villa earned a point against Brighton on opening day of the WSL
Aston Villa manager Natalia Arroyo was satisfied with a point against Brighton to kick off the WSL season but believes there is more to come from her players.
The Villains were held to a stalemate on the road against Brighton in the only goalless draw of the weekend.
There was nothing to separate the teams at Broadfield Stadium on Sunday afternoon and a draw was a fair result.
Aston Villa had the better of the chances after hitting the post twice, but Natalia Arroyo didn’t feel too hard done by after the result.
“It’s good to start by not conceding goals with some points away from home.” Arroyo said. “They asked us a lot of questions but I think that in most parts of the game we were able to answer them properly.
“We need to improve to manage the game a little bit better with the ball but in the big picture I am satisfied with a point.”
Villa kept just two clean sheets last season so starting with one on the road this year certainly showed improvement for the side.
With England manager Sarina Wiegman in attendance, Michelle Agyemang shone again for the Seagulls.
The teenager completed another loan move to Brighton from Arsenal in the summer and was only denied a goal in the opener by the post.
“When the game was more difficult in the second half i think we dealt with it well… the energy we brought from the bench was good,” Arroyo continued.
“Hopefully we can take from this that if we work hard for each other we will be able to be a solid and competitive team.”
Aston Villa may regret not taking three points away from Brighton with a tough run of fixtures coming up.
The Clarets face Chelsea next weekend before hosting Liverpool in their first two home games of the campaign.
