With the January transfer window now open, Paris Saint-Germain has the chance to move players who no longer fit into their plans, and Marco Asensio seems to be one of them.

Since November 30, the former Real Madrid star’s role has drastically reduced. He’s lost his starting spot and has rarely featured as a substitute. His only appearance since then was on December 6, when he played just 11 minutes against AJ Auxerre.

Asensio has been on the bench for three of PSG’s last four Ligue 1 matches in 2024 and was left out of the squad entirely for the Coupe de France Round of 64 clash with RC Lens.

He was also an unused substitute in the Trophée des Champions against AS Monaco. All these signs suggest that Asensio’s future at the club is increasingly uncertain, and a departure seems more likely.

L’Equipe’s Loïc Tanzi reports that PSG are making progress in discussions with a Premier League club about selling Asensio this January.

This news comes out as Le Parisien’s Marc Mechenoua reported that, in addition to interest from Aston Villa, Asensio has other options available. While PSG has not clearly signaled his departure, Asensio is looking for more playing time.

Recently, RMC Sport’s Fabrice Hawkins reported that Aston Villa are keeping an eye on Marco Asensio as a potential target for the January transfer window.

While there have been no talks of a direct swap involving Asensio and Jhon Durán, the interest from both clubs could give PSG leverage in negotiating a lower fee for Durán.

Last month, a report suggested that Asensio is weighing whether to stay at PSG until the summer or make a move this winter. He is said to have attracted attention from clubs like Bayer Leverkusen, Inter Milan, Lyon, Aston Villa, Newcastle, MLS teams, and clubs in Asia.

Since joining PSG in 2023, the 28-year-old has played in 46 matches across all competitions, scoring seven goals and providing 11 assists. Transfermarkt values him at €20 million.
