Aston Villa are eyeing a move for AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori, according to journalist Luca Bianchin.
Villa need a new centre-half after Ezri Konsa left to join Arsenal, and Tomori is one of their defensive targets. He could be sold for around €15 million.
Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Lucas Digne and Konsa have all left Villa this summer. Ollie Watkins could follow them out the door.
Tomori has caught the eye after five solid seasons with Milan, during which he helped his club win the league and the Italian Super Cup.
He was a mainstay in the first team last season under Massimiliano Allegri, operating in a back three or four.
However, new manager Ruben Amorim has shown him the door, allowing Villa to pounce.
Villa’s pursuit of Tomori feels underwhelming, particularly for a club that needs to replace Konsa.
Tomori’s pace is his biggest asset, allowing him to recover quickly when exposed and defend a high line.
Beyond that, there are serious questions over whether he can truly improve Villa’s backline.
Tomori can struggle aerially and is hardly an imposing presence in central defence, which could leave Villa vulnerable against more physical Premier League attacks.
The price may appear reasonable, but value should not be confused with suitability. Villa need to be more ambitious.
Tomori’s speed is useful, but it should not be enough to make an otherwise uninspiring defensive target the answer to their problems.
