Aston Villa star Matty Cash enjoyed an eventful international break, bagging twice in the two games, and fans will be hoping he brings that form back to Villa Park.

Unfortunately, the Aston Villa right-back picked up a knock in Poland’s 3-1 win over Finland and his coach, Jan Urban, decided to substitute him at half-time.

Urban said (via Przegladsportowy), “He suffered a severe contusion from a foul, which doctors and physiotherapists treated him for. It’s a typical knee injury to the quadriceps.

“The longer you run with something like that, the harder it starts to harden.

However, there is a boost for the Villains as Urban revealed that Cash was eager to play the second half despite the knock.

“He was limping towards the end of the first half. Despite that, he wanted to play on. I personally convinced him to make a substitution.”

The Villans are heading to the Hill Dickinson Stadium this Saturday to take on Everton. Villa are searching for their first three points of the season and need all hands on deck.

Cash, who has been in terrific form for Villa and Poland, is a key player. Villa boss Unai Emery will hope to have the 28-year-old back fit and firing for this weekend.

The Villains have endured a poor start to the 2025/26 season, failing to score in their first three games and picking up only a point.

But as tempting as it is to throw Cash straight back in, Aston Villa cannot afford to gamble on a half-fit player at this stage of the season.

The campaign is a marathon, not a sprint, and aggravating his knock could sideline him for far longer. Everton will target Villa’s right side, but Emery has options.

January signing Andres Garcia offers defensive cover, while academy graduate Lamare Bogarde could use the chance to prove himself at the Premier League level.

Both may lack Cash’s experience, but protecting him now ensures Villa keep a vital asset fresh for the months ahead.
