Aston Villa have been handed a possible triple injury lift before this weekend’s Premier League meeting with Sunderland, with senior players back in first team training.

According to Sunderland Echo, Emi Martinez, Tyrone Mings and Jadon Sancho all trained on Wednesday after missing the 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest.

Martinez withdrew on Sunday with a calf issue and will be monitored for a potential return against Bologna.

Mings also sat out the City Ground trip but could be involved in midweek. Sancho has been sidelined by a shoulder injury sustained in a friendly against Elche CF.

Unai Emery later said Martinez was back in training and would normally be available the next day, with a final decision to follow. On Sancho, he said the player is returning, needs consistency, is adapting well and had finished strongly before the international break when the injury occurred.

Villa host Serie A side Bologna in the Europa League quarter-final second leg at Villa Park on Thursday, holding a 3-1 aggregate lead. They then face Sunderland on Sunday, with Emery’s team fourth and 10th-placed Sunderland two points behind Chelsea in sixth.
