Roma clinched the qualification to at least the UEFA Europa League thanks to Inter beating Lazio in the Coppa Italia final, leading to the activation of Donyell Malen’s €25M option to buy, but the discussions with Aston Villa might not stop there, as the English club is keen on Matias Soulé, La Gazzetta dello Sport relays.
The Giallorossi had paid €2M to onboard the Dutchman on an initial loan and will eventually send to Birmingham also ten percent of a future ‘plusvalenza.’ He’s been terrific in his short time in Serie A, scoring 13 goals and dishing out 2 assists in 16 games, becoming one of the most productive January signings in the history of the league.
After formally completing the Malen operation, Aston Villa and Roma could stay in touch to negotiate for Soulé. He’s declined in the second half of the season as he’s been plagued by a sports hernia. None of the Giallorossi players is really untouchable since they’ll need cash fast to comply with a settlement agreement with UEFA. Since they spent €30M to sign the winger from Juventus last summer, the offer would have to be north of €40M.
The capital team is looking for wingers regardless. They are keeping tabs on West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville, RB Leipzig’s Antonio Nusa, and Tottenham’s Mathys Tel.
Nothing can be ruled out, but his departure wouldn’t make a lot of sense financially, given the recency and the numbers of his arrival. They could perhaps mull it over if they retain Paulo Dybala at a reduced rate and the bids are really rich, but that’s a long shot since he’s not been great for a while now.
