Aston Villa are awaiting the results of a scan on goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez’s (33) injury, which could determine his availability for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Burnley, Sky Sports reports.
Martinez, who was initially named in the starting XI to face Feyenoord in the Europa League on Thursday, was forced to withdraw after sustaining a setback during the pre-match warm-up. Unai Emery admitted uncertainty over the severity of the problem, but insisted Villa have the depth to cope if their World Cup-winning goalkeeper is sidelined.
“I don’t know the scan result,” Emery said. “But we are planning always to have players, two, three, or four positions, and confidence to play with every player when they are available and when they are not. The players have to play with the same idea and the same way we are building the team.”
Dutch goalkeeper Marco Bizot deputised in Rotterdam and produced a commanding performance, making eight saves to preserve a clean sheet in Villa’s 2-0 victory. Emery praised his display as “fantastic.” While Villa will hope Martinez is cleared to return, Bizot has proven that he can be called upon and trusted when required.
